Missional Church Requires Missional Leadership

The MA in Missional Leadership equips Christians for leadership roles within the
church, with particular reference to understanding and engaging with the challenges
of leadership in a post-Christian, postmodern cultural setting.

The MA in Missional Leadership is a three year Master’s course validated by
York St. John University. It is a practical, blended-learning theology course, in which
the academic context of the course is reflected on within the students’ own ministry setting.

Course Structure

The course is comprised of six modules and a dissertation. The six modules are studied over two years, establishing a theoretical base, acquisition of key skills, as well as a critical engagement of missional leadership. In the third and final year students complete a dissertation on a subject of their own choice related to the themes of the course.

Students are supplied with comprehensive Learning Packs for each topic on the course. Students are also given access to a range of materials on our Online Virtual Learning Environment including video tutorials and theological journals.

This is supported by regular engagement with a Regional Study Network (RSN) – local study groups comprised of fellow students, who meet to review, discuss and enhance their learning guided by a tutor.

Assignments

The course is assessed by six essays (4,000 words); one essay per module. Each essay is accompanied by a reflective exercise based on a student journal (1,000 words). In their final year students submit a dissertation proposal (1,000-1,500 words) before undertaking a final dissertation of 12,000 – 14,000 words.

Regional Study Networks (RSN)

For the academic year 2011/12 there are five Regional Study Networks located at Birmingham, Bristol, Exeter, London (Balham),Leeds and Rugby. We hope to run centres in Cardiff and Reading – please contact us to see if there is a centre near you.

Each RSN meets for two full days per term to explore and discuss course materials. Each Regional Study Network is facilitated by a tutor and administrator.

Summer School

All MA students come together for an annual summer school for their first two years of study. Summer School is held over an extended weekend in July. Three topics – taken from three different modules – are covered at Summer School as well as induction sessions (for first year students), research skills sessions (for second year students) and a graduation ceremony for graduands. Summer School is a compulsory part of the MA. There is an extra cost for Summer School and prices are determined each year.

For those intending to join the Course in July or September you may be required to attend summer school which this year will be from the 13th to the 16th of July

Fees

For the year 2012-13 course fees are £4850* spread over three years. A number of payment options are available to students.
*This is costed at £1450 per year, plus £250 for Summer School for the first two years.

Entry Requirements

Springdale College admits students to the programme of 18 years of age or above who fulfil the English language requirements* and have:-

• a first degree, single or joint, or a Graduate/Postgraduate Diploma, in Theology & Religious Studies or a closely related subject.

• a first degree in another subject, and evidence of further academic study in the field of theology and/or experience in Christian ministry, evidenced by referees. The evidence of further academic study may be by reference or transcript from an appropriate institution rather than necessarily by formal qualifications.

• significant ministry experience**, evidenced by referees, may enrol on a single module from the course as an access student. Upon successful completion of the module the student can enrol for the full programme transferring the 20 credits gained.

Notes to entry requirements

* English Language Requirements: students for whom English is not their first language will need to pass an IELTS (or equiv) academic test at level 6.5 min.

** ‘Significant ministry experience’ here denotes work in the broad field of Christian ministry, over a period of at least three years and in a position of seniority which requires the training and/or leading of others. Such a position may be full-time, part-time, ordained or lay.
